On 9th of November 1732 St Alphonsus founded the congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, in Italy, popularly known as the "Redemptorists" with the aim to preach the Gospel to the poor, especially the most abandoned.
On 5th January 1939 three Irish Redemptorists Frs. Matthew Hickey, Gerard Mc Donnell and Leo O'Halloran landed in Colombo and from there they came to India. On October 1st 1945 the Indian Redemptorist Mission was constituted as a Vice Province. On August 15th 1972 the Province of Bangalore came into existence.
