The Margao slum school was started in Santa Cruz chapel in Khareband slum, on 15th August 1983. When some locals of Khareband objected, Nano Nagle school was shifted to the premises of Loyola High School in Margao, after a written agreement with the Goa Jesuit authorities and with Sr. Rose Marie FHIC as the Principal of Margao Nano Nagle School.
Gradually the parents of the regular morning section of the Loyola High School brought objection to the usage of the same benches by the slum children. Therefore, Margao Nano Nagle School saw expulsion from Loyola School and housed at the property of Mrs. Auda Veigas in Margao.
In all there were three Nano Nagle Schools in Goa, started for the slum children: Mangoor - Vasco, Birla Zuari factory at Sancoale and Margao. All three were English Medium Schools.
Formation of the Trust of Nano Nagle School
When Konkani was made the compulsory medium of instruction in Primary Schools, Margao Nano Nagle School maintained English Medium, financed by Fr Fermin D'Souza SJ. In order to run it independently of the Archdiocese of Goa, The Trust of Nano Nagle was formed and was registered in Mormugao on 19th March 1986 with Reg. No 97/86
Nano Nagle National Open School
As TNNS - Goa was registering the Goa slum children with Delhi's 'National Open School', the name of the Margao slum school was changed to Nano Nagle National Open School. But the name of the registered Trust remained the same.
Financial instability
Though the trust was an independent legal entity, TNNS - Goa was financially very weak. Therefore, the Jesuit founder of TNNS - Goa, gave the Margao slum school to the then Jesuit Provincial of Goa Rev. Fr. Patrick D'Mello SJ. The Jesuit Provincial took up the Margao TNNS-Goa on the condition that the name of the school be changed to Loyola National Open School.
As financial woes continued, "Jan ugahi", a registered organization focused on development of women workers of the slum areas of South Goa, helped TNNS-Goa to get in touch with the Netherland based Organization - "Terre des Hommes-Netherlands" (TdH-Nl), which runs a huge school in Hosur, Tamil Nadu for the poor children. The secular minded officers of TdH-Nl, came to Goa and inspected the education work for the TNNS-Goa. They were highly impressed and at once decided to add the first floor to the school building. They also gave a ten-seater car, raised the compound wall of the property and provided needed training for the teachers.
CSsR & TNNS
TNNS-Goa did not have a Computer laboratory. They depended on Rosary College for computer practicals. Jan-Ugahi gave TNNS-Goa a few computers. However they weren't sufficient. As the founder of the school, Dr. Khristanand Desai was looking for refurbishment and financial stability of the school, God heard his prayers, which were written on the wall of Margao slum school. Mrs. Fatima Gomes, who was part of TNNS, spoke to her Redemptorist nephew Fr. Gregory Noronha CSsR, the then Vicar Vice-Provincial of the Redemptorists of the V Province of Majella. There began the journey of the Redemptorists with the TNNS.
Fr. Theodore D'Souza CSsR, who was the Rector of Varca community, made provision for more computers. Through "Mukti Society", the Redemptorists began paying the honorarium of the teaching and non-teaching staff of TNNS-Goa. Consequently, Fr. Theodore D'Souza and Fr. Henry Fernandes of the Redemptorists became the Trustees of TNNS-Goa and later a resolution was passed stating that all the trustees of TNNS-Goa should be Redemptorists, meaning that gradually the school will be given to the Redemptorists. In the following year, Fr. Rithesh Rosario CSsR was made the Principal of the school. The Rector of Varca Fr Eugene D'Silva is the Manager of the school.
