The Redemptorist missioners arrived in the diocese of Mangalore in 1998, with a view to establish a Religious Community. Initially the members (Frs Eugene and Lester) were residing in Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar in a house belonging to the church. They served in Kulshekar and Shaktinagar parishes up to the year 2002. They were also engaged in preaching ministry in the diocese and elsewhere.
Very Rev. Fr. Edwin C Pinto, the Founder of the 'Helpers of Mount Rosary,' Alangar, Moodbidri and the then VG of the diocese of Mangalore, motivated the Redemptorists to establish their religious community in the campus of Mount Rosary Charitable Institutions. Thus the present community of Nithyadar Nivas, Alangar was built.
It was blessed on the 08th of December, 2004 by the Bishop of Mangalore Most. Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul DSouza in the presence of the Provincial Superior V. Rev. Fr. Xavier Sanjivi, CSsR, Rev. Fr. Eugene D'Silva CSsR the Regional Superior and a large number of priests, religious and lay faithful. This residence was raised to the status of a canonical religious house by our Superior General Fr Joseph Tobin on 26th March, 2008.
Fr Eugene DSilva was the pioneer in building this house and he was also the first superior of the community. This house was primarily built for fathers to stay and work in and around the diocese of Mangalore, Udupi, Karwar and Belgaum and also to accommodate young boys who joined us, as an initial house of formation.
Fr Gabriel Lobo is the present Rector of the community. Frs Vivian Moniz, Freddie Menezes, Rohan Dias, Dony Cardoza, Noel Mascarenhas and Ashwil Dias are the present members of the community. Right now this community has an extended house attached to a parish (St. Francis Xavier Church, Saverapura) where Noel and Ashwil reside and serve.
The members are engaged in various apostolates like preaching parish missions, preaching retreats and recollections to priests and religious, retreats and orientation programmes in schools and colleges, teaching in the seminary, looking after a parish and working among the destitute and marginalized.
In this community the seminarians gather for their morning prayer at 6.10 followed by mass. At 7.45 am confreres gather in the chapel for Lauds. In the evening at 7.20 the students pray their rosary and at 7.45 the confreres pray the Vespers.
The seminarians study PUC and Degree studies in the local colleges while residing at Nityadhar Nivas.
